The Nepali Alphabet

Nepali is written in Devanagari, the same script used for Hindi, Marathi and Sanskrit. It has 36 consonants and 12 vowels, and unlike the Latin alphabet its order is not arbitrary.

What kind of writing system this is

Devanagari is not an alphabet in the strict sense. It is an abugida: every consonant carries a built-in a sound, and other vowels are written as marks attached to it.

So is not k — it is ka. To get ki you add a mark: कि. To get a bare k with no vowel at all you add a halant underneath: क्. This is the single most important thing to understand, and it explains almost every apparent oddity in the script.

The twelve vowels

LetterSign on SoundRoughly like
athe a in about
काāthe a in father
किithe i in sit
कीīthe ee in see
कुuthe u in put
कूūthe oo in food
कृrithe ri in ridge
केethe e in they
कैaithe ai in aisle
कोothe o in go
कौauthe ow in how
अंकंa nasal ending

The left column is the independent form, used at the start of a word. The second column shows the same vowel attached to a consonant. You need both.

The thirty-six consonants

The order is phonetic. Consonants are grouped by where in the mouth they are produced, moving from the back of the throat forward to the lips. Within each group the order is: unvoiced, unvoiced aspirated, voiced, voiced aspirated, nasal.

The retroflex and dental rows are the pair English speakers struggle with most. and both sound like t to an untrained ear, but they are entirely different letters and swapping them changes the word.

The line across the top

The horizontal stroke running along the top of a word is the shirorekha, literally the head-line. It is not decoration. It marks where one word ends and the next begins, which matters in a script that historically did not always use spaces.

When letters join into a conjunct — + becoming क्ष — the shirorekha runs unbroken across the whole cluster. That continuity is how a reader knows the letters belong together.

How to practise

Learn the vowels first, both forms, because you cannot write anything without them. Then take the consonant groups one row at a time rather than in bulk; the phonetic ordering means each row shares a mouth position and they reinforce each other.

Use the Nepali typing tool to check yourself: type what you think the romanization is and see whether the Devanagari matches what you intended.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nepali written in the same script as Hindi?

Yes, both use Devanagari, and the letters are largely the same. The languages differ in vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation, so being able to read one does not mean you can understand the other.

How long does it take to learn to read Devanagari?

Most people can decode simple words within a couple of weeks of regular practice. Fluent reading takes longer, mainly because of conjunct clusters, which combine two or three consonants into a single shape.

What is the halant?

The small diagonal stroke beneath a consonant that removes its built-in vowel. is ka; क् is a bare k. It is what makes consonant clusters possible.
